Nelspruit - A mother who disturbed five burglars was beaten and left in the mud while the men snatched her nine-year-old daughter whom they raped in turn.

The woman was woken by the sound of people moving around in her house.

When she went to investigate, five men grabbed her.

They had been robbing her, but when she interrupted them, they tried to tear off her panties.

She fought back, so they beat the living daylights out of her, dragged her out into the rain, and continued to pummel her until she passed out in the mud.

Raped in cemetery

Then they went into house, finished looting it, and abducted her nine-year-old daughter, who was still asleep in the room she shared with her younger brother.

Constable Chicco Nkosi of KaNyamazane police in Mpumalanga said on Thursday: "The little girl was taken to a cemetery where all five men raped her.

"She managed to escape when the men started quarrelling about how to share the stolen stuff. Then her mother took her to the police station and charges were laid."

A docket was opened for rape and abduction, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and housebreaking with the intent to steal and to rape.

When the police got information about where one of the suspects stayed, they raided the house.

They found 14 cellphones, 12 kettles, three jackets, bed linen, eight cellphone chargers and a TV with its remote control device.

Searching for three suspects

The arrested suspect led the police to another suspect, who was also arrested.

The men appeared in KaNyamazane magistrate's court on November 20, and the case was referred to Nelspruit regional court.

"The other three suspects have not been found yet," said Nkosi.
