[This is one of the old but important stories from the original AfricanCrisis website that I am converting on to the new site, in the new format. These photos were from round about 2002. Jay Jay Sibanda has long since passed away and his organisation has faded away. It was successfully compromised by the ANC Govt of South Africa. I am the only person who ever knew what exactly happened and how their demise came about. Jay Jay was the person who arranged most of the protests, and the best ones in South Africa. He tried really hard with very limited resources, but the ANC got hold of him and put him in his place. It all happened one day when he decided to try to kidnap Robert Mugabe's wife Grace when she came to visit here in Johannesburg. Jay Jay phoned me saying to me that he wanted to kidnap her. I told him it was a crazy idea. It was quite funny really. Jay Jay phoned me to say that Radio 702 had discovered the hotel and room number where Grace Mugabe was staying at Caesar's palace in Johannesburg. He phoned me to say that he had a pickup truck and he could rustle up some guys. He was thinking of just rushing into the hotel and trying to grab her. It was in the afternoon when he phoned. He was really excited and keen to go for it. He wanted to strike a blow against Mugabe. I told him it was a crazy thing to do, especially in broad daylight. So I suggested to him that he rather phone some journalists and tell them where she was and that he should then hold a protest. He went ahead and did that, and it worked very well. The people in the hotel were hanging out of the windows and cheering the Zimbabweans on as they protested. Then, to top it all, the hotel management set dogs on them to chase them away. Jouranalists were on hand to record and write about the events. Then Jay Jay got a lot of air time on Radio 702 to describe the events of the day. He got a lot of exposure on radio and in print as a result of this event. Some time later, the ANC started hounding Jay Jay and they knew about his contacts with me. The ANC very successfully intercepted emails of mine and I have no doubt that they fed him other information about me in order to turn him against me. In the end, the ANC won, and destroyed our association. But Jay Jay's co-opting by the ANC did not help him. In the end, he faded away, his protests stopped and he changed completely. He had changed a lot from the firebrand I had known. Prime Minister Tsvangirai in Zimbabwe and the MDC face the same problems now. Jan]

| | The following are newspaper clippings from South African newspapers showing the activities of the Concerned Zimbabweans Abroad in various South African cities as they desperately try to remind people that their families north of the border are being murdered by Mugabe. There are over 2.5 million black Zimbabweans who have fled to South Africa either for a better life, or, more often, to save themselves from attack by Mugabe. Many of these people you see in these photos were activists in Zimbabwe (for the MDC), who fled for their lives because Mugabe's agents were targetting them.

| | President Mbeki, Please Help Zimbabwe... This protest took place in Pretoria. On the left, behind the Trees are the Union Buildings (SA's equivalent of Capitol Hill). On this day, President Mbeki and several foreign ambassadors actually drove right by the sign which read "Hoot if you think Mbeki must act on Zimbabwe". But President Mbeki said nothing, and did nothing… to his old friend Robert Mugabe… see the photo below…

| | The Total Eclipse Early in December 2002, we had a total eclipse of the Sun in the north of South Africa, near the border with Zimbabwe. The Concerned Zimbabweans Abroad went to hold some protests up there to emphasise what is happening north of the border. I like their banner which reads: "Mugabe casts a dark shadow over Southern Africa"
