[2 Docs] EXCLUSIVE: Declassified NATO documents describing the West's war strategy in Afghanistan

Date Posted: Saturday 28-Feb-2009

Here is a declassified NATO document which I see is marked for "Official Use" only. Should I have this? Well, I do. (Sorry NATO!)

Anyhow, this document explains how they will fight the war in Afghanistan.

I notice the USA wants to withdraw from Iraq, where the war is easy to win, and they are focussing more on the war in Afghanistan, where it is more remote, and much more difficult to win!

I notice too the document contains all the sort of "Politically Correct", hearts-and-minds junk which so far has never won a war.

I must be honest, I am very skeptical about the fact that the West wants to withdraw from Iraq but wants to win the war in Afghanistan. I fail to understand the military logic therein. Afghanistan is guerilla territory. The Soviets lost there. I think the Afghans even beat the British there (I could be wrong). Iraq is a different kettle of fish. It is easier to fight there, and the terrain is largely flat. So the terrorist war there resembles the ANC's terrorist war in South Africa's townships - which I might add, it was not necessarily winning either! But Afghanistan is more like the war in Rhodesia. The terrain is well suited to terrorists.

So why leave the place where you can win easily, and go off and fight in the nightmare place? I still am not convinced that the War in Iraq is truly won.

The West, in my opinion, is stuffing around. They keep on wasting ever more money on these silly wars. These wars cost an arm and a leg, and at this time, the entire Western world's financial system is in TOTAL MELTDOWN.

Read these documents below and realise that these wars will suck money out of the West for decades to come.

>I fail to understand the military logic therein.
It is from the area that Afghanistan is in that it is prophesied that the army will come that will liberate the Holy land from oppression.
Now do you understand?

You are correct. The English have been run out of Afghanistan not once but twice. (Get ready for strike three, coming soon.) More than one Russian regime, most recently the Communist one, were also chased away, but it doesn't stop there. Numerous conquest attempts by the Persians (Iran) have been shut down by the Afghans, along with invasions by Genghis Khan and Alexander the Great, who were also ousted by the people who live there. In fact no one down through recorded history has ever been able to subjugate Afghanistan. Of course it is a disgrace watching the world's richest country trying to conquer the world's poorest country, however thus far, even the US high command admits stalemate exists after seven years and billions thrown down a rat hole. The Afghans, since they have few resources, see invading foreigners as a source of wealth. They eagerly accept their pay, join their puppet military, work civilian jobs for them, then kill them at night and take what the foreigners bring. As far as they are concerned, the longer foreigners are there to exploit, the better for them. They know that ultimately, the foreigners will slink away into the dark, bleeding and broke. It has never been any other way.

When I was in the military the classification "Official Use Only" was no big deal; it essentially meant that it was not secret. "Confidential" is the lowest classification that actually is secret. They run from "Confidential" to "Secret" (I had a secret clearance) to "Top Secret." Above "Top Secret," of course are the classifications whose names are actually secret themselves; I only know they exist, and not anything about them. The upshot of all this is that the document you have is probably more propaganda than real plans.

The "hearts and minds" strategy may have worked in 1991, but I think people are learning, i.e. despite the horrid oppression of the Taliban in Afghanistan during their rein, a recent survey shows that upwards of 50% of Afghans, knowing fully well what the Taliban are all about, nevertheless believe that compared to current circumstances, that things were overall better (even) under the Taliban. This may not be hearts and minds but surely gut-level sentiment.

Regardless of winning strategy or not, attacking and invading a country for no other reason than that you can is a war crime. Killing 1 million Iraqi citizens, the majority of which are civilians is another war crime. Why in the world would Canada or any other NATO nation want to be involved in another such war, this time in Afghanistan? What is NATO's interest in that country? Where is NATO's raison d'etre located anyway? I thought it was a northern hemispheric treaty organization related to protecting Europe mostly from itself and perhaps from the old Soviet Union. Why is it in Afghanistan? What has Afghanistan ever done to Europe? For that matter what has Afghanistan ever done to Canada and the US (it wasn't Afghanistan that participated in 911, the great majority of terrorists in that tragic event were Saudis). Why didn't the US invade Saudi Arabia? I'm sorry but war is evil and when it's also discretionary it is beyond evil.

hearts and minds warfare isn't rubbish, Jan..., just successful only in small scale warfare: the SAS is reknowned for using it, and is the best fighting force in the world, alongside the Canadian Airbourne Regiment that was, for doing so.

in the first Gulf War the SAS persuaded the Iraqis to draw their mortal guns back from the border and thus not shell Israel...
