Men beat visitors in farmer's absence
Date Posted: Saturday 03-May-2008Two men, aged between 55 and 60, were allegedly assaulted by two men at a farm on the old Koster road near Swartruggens, North-West police said on Saturday.
Captain Adele Myburgh said the incident took place around 3pm on Thursday.
The man, aged around 60, went to the farm to discuss the sale of geese with the farmer. The farmer was not home and the man spoke to an elderly woman at the house.
While the man was talking to the woman two other men, thought to be visiting the farm, allegedly started to assault him.
The two men allegedly kicked and hit the man so severely that they broke one of his arms.
The other man, aged approximately 55, arrived to discuss the sale or purchase of a cow. When he arrived the man aged about 60 managed to escape.
The two men then allegedly started to assault the other man. He managed to fend off his attackers and got into his bakkie and drove away.
Police were investigating a case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and another case of common assault.
The man aged about 60 was taken up in hospital for treatment of his broken arm.
The two alleged attackers were known.
Police had arrested one of the men by 2.10pm on Saturday and were expecting to arrest the other man soon.
When asked whether the incident was a racist attack, because the two older men were black and the two attackers white, Myburgh said police could not confirm this and that the two alleged attackers had been under the influence of alcohol at the time. - Sapa
