Police kill man who stabbed baby

In an enraged fit sparked by fears of his girlfriend's infidelity, Andries Nkosi grabbed his 18-month-old daughter and stabbed her behind the ear.
Nkosi was shot twice by police and died in hospital less than 24 hours later.
The drama unfolded on Wednesday evening in the informal settlement of Ratanda, near Heidelberg.
Nokuphiwa Kafile, 29, and Nkosi, 25, were involved in a bitter argument about her work, and he allegedly accused Kafile of infidelity.
"We had been fighting all week - mainly about my work. He thought I was having an affair with my boss.
"I left my child at the creche, and when I wanted to fetch her, he said he wanted to do so. We both went to the lady who was looking after the baby.
"All of a sudden he grabbed her, saying 'it's my child and I'm taking her'," she said.
He left with the child and Kafile went to report the matter to the police.
Inspector Cyril Khumalo on Thursday said that when police arrived at the couple's home on Wednesday, they found the man in the yard, holding his daughter in one arm, a knife in the other hand and threatening to kill the child.
"He walked out from the yard towards the veld and held the child by her feet. Police tried to negotiate with him, but he refused, so we fired a warning shot," Khumalo said.
Nkosi then proceeded to stab little Amanda behind her ear before police fired two shots at him - in the right thigh and in the abdomen.
"When he fell to the ground, police handcuffed him and he was taken to Heidelberg Hospital under police guard," Khumalo said.
He was later transferred to Tembisa Hospital, where he died on Thursday.
Amanda was also transported to hospital, and she is in a stable condition.
