SA: Robben Island animals starve
Date Posted: Friday 02-May-2008[Maybe we should campaign for the freedom of the Robben Island animals from ANC oppression. Jan]
Robben Island's natural environment is in crisis, with animals including bontebok, springbok, fallow deer and rabbits starving to death because of a lack of vegetation on this World Heritage Site
And environmentalists are blaming neglect by the Robben Island Museum, which manages the island.
The problem is mainly the result of an explosion of the feral rabbit population, which is eating everything in sight.
Environmentalists are horrified by this state of affairs, and are blaming the Robben Island Museum for the disaster because it allegedly ignored warnings given three years ago about the ecological threat posed by the rabbits.
The museum falls under the Department of Arts and Culture.
Conservationists want the island's managers to institute a crisis plan immediately for the remaining mammals on the island and to develop an environmental management plan.
Robben Island Museum had not responded at the time of going to press.
