[Pic] Zimbabwean Economist Predicts 400,000% inflation in 2008
Date Posted: Monday 31-Mar-2008Here is an image of a spreadsheet produced by Robertson, who has done excellent work in Zimbabwe. He is speculating about the introduction of balance of payments support. I am not sure if that will happen.
But if you will look at his calculations he is expecting inflation to hit a staggering 400,000% by September 2008! This is quite achievable.
The state of that country is shocking. It will probably become a text book for some of the worst inflation in all of history.
Here is the spreedsheet he prepared.

Using linear versus log give a much distorted picture of a 165,000% inflation rate.
At 165,000%, the daily price increase is 2.0513%, the formula being: (1*165490/100)^(1/365)
Therefore a loaf of bread costing R7.00 today would increase as follows:
Tomorrow: 7.14
Next week: 8.07
Next month: 12.98
Next quarter: 284.76
Next year: 11,584.30

I have often asked my parents-in-laws how they cope with the ever rising prices in Zimbabwe - so I decided to create a calculator for myself - it calculates the cost of something and increases it according to the inflation rate of 165,000% and forecasts the cost in the future: Zim Inflation calculator @ 165,000%
After reading this article, I realise that not only do the prices go up, but so too does the inflation rate!
