Rape of Dutch Tourist INSIDE Hotel

Date Posted: Saturday 15-Mar-2008

Submitted by Herbert:

[This boggles the mind. The Dutch tourist was raped *inside* her hotel room in a 4 star hotel in Somerset West, outside Cape Town. And I stumbled across this article on a local newspaper, not even a national one. Tourists beware! Herbert]

"AN incident of this nature has never occurred at a NH Hotels property in the past and it is deeply regretted, says Erik Jansen, Managing Director, NH Hotels South Africa: NH The Lord Charles Hotel, a member of the international NH Hotels group.

He confirmed on Wednesday that a female hotel resident was assaulted and robbed in her room at the NH Lord Charles on the weekend. The guest was travelling with a group of Dutch tourists.

"The victim's care has been our primary concern and we have ensured that she receives all the necessary medical assistance and counselling. My team and I have been strongly affected and shocked by this incident and you can be assured that all steps have been taken to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all our guests. Security on the property has been increased and we are in continuous communication with the local police to further monitor the situation."

Mr Jansen said they cannot comment further on any detail of the incident whilst the police investigation is in progress.

Mariette Du Toit-Helmbold's (CEO) of Cape Town Tourism strongly condemned the incident.

"Although we have had no reported cancellations due to this incident, we recognise that safety and security remain the single largest stumbling block in our way to realise our country's true tourism potential."

She said they were working closely with all parties such as the police, government and private sector on tourism safety and have an integrated tourism safety plan that incorporates pro-active and reactive programmes. "Our visitor support programme has been activated to support the Dutch visitor in any way possible. This is an isolated incident and we have no reason to believe that the hotel's security system is not up to standard."

Alderman Gisela Jespersen echoed her sentiments and added that what happened was shocking and not good for tourism.

According to a police report it is still not known how the perpetrator gained access to the hotel room.

The 60-year-old Dutch tourist was con-fronted by a man in her bathroom, when she returned to her room at about 01:00. The intruder demanded money and she gave him R3 600 which she had in her purse. The man then bound her feet and hands behind her back with the belt of a bathrobe and used a shirt to gag her.

After raping her, he fell asleep on the bed, awakening again at 03:00. He then raped her again and after securing her arms again behind her back with a piece of telephone cord, left through the sliding doors at the rear of the room.

No arrest has yet been made, but an identikit of the suspect is being drawn up.

Anyone with information can phone the investigating officer, Inspector Abraham Arries from the Female and Child Sexual Offences unit on (021) 918-3571/3239, 078 653 8163.

Fanie that is the silliest comment. Sixty-year-old female sex tourist from Holland? Get a life already! he could easily have just sat there and waited for her. He could have been staff member. He's a filthy rapist robber and you blame the VICTIM?

The biggest newspaper in The Netherlands featured it prominently. And the readers' responses leave nothing to the imagination either - with people noting that this is the "third-world robbers' paradise where the World Cup 2010 is going to be held'. Some also say they won't go the the World Cup 2010 because they know about the high crime rate already...
