SA: He wanted to cut my head off, slit my throat & asked me why I'm not dying...

Date Posted: Friday 03-Aug-2007

[This just disgusts me and makes me sick to the pit of my stomach.

I am sure all this nonsense of him no remembering anything due to drugs is complete junk.

But take special note that he was due to be released from prison AND HE WANTED TO RETURN TO PRISON FOR A LONG TIME! That shows you there are criminals who like prison and who see it as a type of dole. Of course, it is proof once more that the hideous crime wave in S.Africa is a result of our laws and the way we do things. Criminals are treated so well that they don't want to leave! Jan]

An inmate at Baviaanspoort prison threatened to decapitate a nurse at the prison hospital before he "sliced her throat from ear to ear, slicing though it like a piece of bread", the Pretoria high court was told on Wednesday.

The nurse on Wednesday relived her nightmarish ordeal when she and a fellow nurse were overpowered by an inmate while working in the hospital on a Sunday in March 2005. The woman explained in a hoarse, barely audible voice how she tried to summon help using sign language as blood poured from her throat.

"I could not manage to make a sound and I breathed through my slit throat," she whispered.

Her name cannot be made public as she was indecently assaulted, while her colleague was raped.

'I literally want to decapitate you'
Their alleged attacker, Thabo Masinga, 21, was at the time serving a sentence in the youth section of the prison.

Masinga pleaded not guilty to attempted murder, indecent assault and rape. He said he could not recall what had happened as he was under the influence of drugs that had an "unexpected" effect on his mental state.

The nurse who took the stand on Wednesday said she could hear the sound of the knife as Masinga slit the throat of her colleague. He then turned on her.

The two naked and bloodied women were left in the storeroom in the prison hospital to "die in peace".

The nurse testified that Masinga from time to time swept the floors in the prison hospital.

He was not on duty on this particular Sunday, but she bumped into him in the corridor of the hospital.

"He looked aggressive and he had a sharpened piece of wire in his hand with which he stabbed me in the hand."

She said he dragged her to the linen room where he threw her on the floor and trampled on her.

The other nurse, who was busy working in the linen room, was also attacked by Masinga and thrown on the ground. They were told not to make a noise, as it angered him.

"Masinga told us his intention was to kill us. He specifically told me 'I literally want to decapitate you - separate your head from your body'."

The nurse said Masinga also told them that he wanted to commit a "substantial" crime, something like a murder, because he was due to be released soon and he had nowhere to go. He asked the nurse whether she would take him in and when she said no, he became angrier.

She said he ordered them to undress and when they were naked, he tied them up with their clothing and stuffed their underwear into their mouths. He then demanded money from them and he fetched their handbags in another room.

"He threatened that if we fled, he would kill us." The nurse said Masinga then left the room with the other nurse and he stayed away for a long time.

When he returned, he fetched the witness and took her to the store room. Here she saw her colleague lying on her stomach on a stretcher, still tied up.

Masinga this time had a knife in his hand and he turned towards the other nurse. "He touched her head and I could feel the cutting of the knife and I heard her screaming. I clearly heard the sound of a cutting blade.

"He then came to me. He lifted up my head and started to cut my throat. It was not one slicing action, but it was a sawing action; like cutting bread. He started on the left side and when he came to the middle, he stopped and asked me why I was not yet dying," the nurse said.

She testified how blood was pouring out of the wound but he continued to cut to the other side of her neck.

The nurse said after Masinga left them to "die in peace", she clutched her gaping neck with her one hand and tried to untie her colleague with her other hand.

The nurse on Wednesday mimicked the sounds which were coming from her gaping neck and said she soon afterwards lost consciousness.

She stayed in hospital for more than a month.
