EXCLUSIVE: S.Africa's Crumbling Medical Science & State Hospitals

Date Posted: Wednesday 30-May-2007

Some of you will remember that almost 2 years ago I ended up in hospital for several days with a serious sinus problem which required surgery.

The ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) specialist who operated on me was a German Doctor who told me he had spent a lot of time in KwaZulu-Natal. He now has a practise in Johannesburg.

I liked the German because I like that thoroughness and efficiency which the Germans are known for, and which was quite evident in his approach to his patients.

My mother later had a strange dizzy spell which doctors could not treat and which I wondered if it was her inner ear. When I took her to him, he discounted these reasons and asked for a detailed MRI scan. He then said that my mother had not been taking her daily disprin which thins her blood and that she had actually had 4-5 minor strokes which were evident on the scan. He said she must take her daily disprin and just let it be and she will regain her balance after about 2 months. He turned out to be completely right.

So the German ENT specialist and surgeon has actually had me pretty impressed. During one of our discussions he told me that in the ENT arena a lot of exciting scientific progress was being made and that he feels ready to start engaging in his own medical research with Wits University.

That was more than a year ago when we had that discussion.

So today I had to visit him for a renewal of my prescription and I asked him how his research was going. Then he told me that even though he applied for an Honorary Post with Wits University 2 years ago, to this day they have not even responded to his application!

He went on to say that several of his colleagues who are good medical practitioners have also applied for such posts and heard nothing.

Then I told him about the Professor from Wits University who achieved what an orthopaedic surgeon could not when he fixed my Mom's Carpal tunnel syndrome problem in her one hand.

I refer to this article:-
S.Africa: My Mother's Amazing Hand Operation...

I told the ENT specialist how the Professor from Wits (who had even been operating on American troops in the Vietnam days) and other worldclass specialists had been kicked out of the State run Johannesburg General Hospital recently. See the article below:-

SA: World-Class Surgeons kicked out by Johannesburg General Hospital

The ENT Specialist then told me that he and his colleagues have been discussing among themselves why it is that the State does not want specialists like themselves to either work in State run hospitals or engage in surgery - from which mostly Blacks would benefit anyway! Remember these guys do a lot of pro-bono or reduced-rate work for the blacks who can't afford normal medical schemes.

He said to me, the other medical specialists and himself put it down to a lack of equipment and an unwillingness to buy modern equipment for them to work with! He said to me that the equipment he needs to perform the types of surgery he does costs about R1 million and he does not think that the State wants to spend so much on equipment - so they would rather do without the skills of specialists like himself, the Professor and others!

The ANC as always, puts the cart before the horse. They ignore certain things... like the growth of our medical science and they refuse to invest in new equipment in our hospitals and then... eventually we lose out on this knowledge and these potential scientists may even leave this country - not to mention the many thousands of people (mostly black) who would have benefited from their expertise.

We have some real FIRST CLASS, FIRST WORLD intellect in this country - many scientists who if they were given a chance would do world class work. Remember Dr Chris Barnard who did the first heart transplants?

Wits University itself used to be excellent.

These State run hospitals of ours are collapsing ever more. Thank God for private hospitals and for capitalism. That is all that keeps us going.

Just yesterday, THE STAR newspaper had a front-page article saying that Johannesburg General Hospital and Baragwanath (the biggest hospital in the world - also built by Apartheid) are going downhill. They no longer have the expertise to keep their trauma units open at all times. So now they alternate and each weekend one of them closes its trauma units. The newspaper mentioned how they battle to keep the 20 patients in trauma alive because of lack of skills!!

Back in September 2005, I wrote about the despicable way the ANC is running Baragwanath which is the biggest hospital in the world. It is probably the finest humanitarian product of Apartheid - a product the likes of which the ANC has never even come close to matching and most likely never will. Apartheid is always remembered for its supposed cruelty to blacks, but nobody ever mentions this incredible state-of-the-art hospital built by Apartheid primarily for the blacks of Soweto and which has been going DOWNHILL UNDER BLACK RULE!

S.Africa: The Biggest Hospital in the World - ruined by the ANC

The ANC bugger up the beautiful infrastructure of the most advanced country the African continent ever knew. Everything they touch they turns into a mess. They ignore things whites did, then things fall into a state of disrepair.

Then later, when everything is falling apart the blacks try to fix it but by then too much damage is done. Management by Crisis is a black speciality and it doesn't work! Jan.

73-year-old Zulu midwife home-delivers dozens of babies during SA strike:

DURBAN, South Africa. June 17 2007
email journalist: proffesor.ndawonde@inl.co.za

-- The Mercury" journalist Proffesor Ndawonde interviewed 73-year-old Zulu midwife Gezephi Gumede who has turned her four-roomed mud-brick traditional house into a labour ward where scores of desperate pregnant women are now giving birth.

Her house is surrounded by blanketed women waiting to give birth, Ndawonde writes.

While a trained midwife, the Zulu nurse now has no medical equipment nor running water, and is appealing for the community to help her out with food and blankets for the mothers for as long as the strike lasts.

She has only one assistant: Smangele Gcabashe, 22.

the pregnant women told the journalist that striking doctors and nurses are turning away these pregnant women, refusing adamantly to help them deliver their babies at any of the government hospitals in the Durban area.

The strike is now entering is 3rd week and more than 40 people have already died in the intensive care units and even enroute inside ambulances who can't find any hospitals to treat even the most severely-injured trauma-patients.

Since the strike began Mrs Gumede says a steady stream of pregnant women have pitched up, asking for her midwife-services. She charges R40 per delivery.

"God blessed me with these skills and I'm doing this because these women have been (turned away from) hospitals as nurses are on strike.

"It is very heartbreaking to see a woman losing her child," she said from her four-room mud hut on Monday. Although she had no medical equipment for her work, Gumede said she always ensured that the mothers and their babies were safe.

"After giving birth, I advise them to visit clinics or doctors to verify the health condition of their babies. It needs bravery and concentration because a human being has only one life. If you make mistakes, either the baby or the mother can die," she said.

When The Mercury arrived at Gumede's home, a line of pregnant women from around Durban were sitting outside on benches waiting for assistance.

"Two other women are inside (the house) and will be giving birth soon. I always make sure that any pregnant women get assistance.God is with me and before I start the process, I pray to Him for help."

Smangele Gcabashe, who works as Gumede's assistant, heaped praise on Gumede, describing her as "amazing".
"When I was giving birth to my son, who is now 22, she helped me. She has helped many women in the past four weeks, as doctors who are on strike refuse to assist these women. All the babies are fine," said Gcabashe.

Nomusa Ndiyane, 31, a patient of Gumede, said that the community was blessed to have someone as caring as her.

"I was relieved when my mother told me about her, because I was nervous when I heard that women were losing babies because nurses and doctors were on strike," said Ndiyane. Gumede, charges mothers R40, and appealed to the government for help because she could not afford to buy food and blankets for the mothers.

It should come as no suprize Africa is reverting back to the stone age. The black creatures that inhabit that country were convinced into murdering all the White Farmers that made possible the black population explosion with their excess food production. The Zionists needed to do something about the huge number of blacks being born onto that continent. Eradicate the White man from Africa and the Black population will fall through starvation, disease and warfare. Is that not what we have in Africa today?? You think that is an accident, fool!!!! Ironic that the black creatures were convinced to murder their very saviors.

Especially for Willie and Alex with re: to your comments. I took the liberty of posting your comments re: this article to a US site, Rumormillnews. The original post is there and has 322 hits in about 24 hrs. Not outstanding, but not bad either for the end of a three day holiday weekend. Also keep in mind that a lot of those who read RMN have blogs and websites so RMN is not always the end of it. I post with the hope it will hit 500 and when it goes higher, I am really smiling. Every hit is progress. Cultivating interest where little if any existed before is sometimes a slow and tedious process, but a single convert counts, so we soldier on. Here is the link to the article and you can see how it reads along with the first post. I always try and direct people back here to the AC site, one way or another.

We have a similar situation here in Los Angeles with a Hospital called King-Drew. After the Watts Riots many years ago, the local black politicians had to have their own "black" hospital. People are sometimes hired and promoted based on being black rather than on expertise. There are, of course many competent blacks there, but by placing color above competence, the hospital has lost its accredidation, and stands to lose millions in federal funding.

Would it not be intresting to see how the WHO, which is a UN agency, would comment this article?
No prices for guessing: They would create a story which, in the end, lead in the usual way to Apartheid and there you are: the ANC is off the hook again!
For how long still?

You're a pratt. So the government can't afford fancy technology for a very small portion of patients. It needs to get large scale medicine to the people that don't have it. Where are they supposed to get the money from just to keep hundreds of thousands of HIV infected people alive?
You're such a racist - all Germans are prcecise?
Your doc managed to get two diagnoses right. Hooray for him.
Fact is that more people need real medicine. I'm sure you would have no problem letting them die. Lucky for them the ANC is not run by people like you.

Hi Jan
20 years ago I was doing my compulsory Military Training and came out as an Instructor Ops Medic. Part of the training was a stint at a Government hospital in Klerksdorp where the military doctors and medic's helped out.

A little known fact was that anybody that had to see a doctor for any complaint only has to pay a R2.00 Administration fee. There after everything was free. So operations, aftercare, medicine was all free for a paultry R2.00.

I worked in the theatre for a period and witnessed abortions, child birth, stomach ops etc etc. This was under the opressive White government, where the blacks were cared for with compassion by the wicked White military. Now with a Black government and military structure the medical facilities have crumbled to nothing.

1 Military hospital in Pretoria was one of the best in Africa, now it is infested with rats. The military is rife with AIDS and will probably be incapable of protecting the state let alone look after patients in their hospitals.

Live on the distruction of the new free South Africa

Greetings, Jan and AC Readers, I certainly agree with the comment Karl made. This is a tragic scenario and especially with the huge demand in SA for medical treatment with regard to HIV and the new TB strain. How many ways can a people be destroyed? As many as it takes! For heaven's sake don't just sit back and let it happen.

I am really glad to see this article. It is something that is happening here in the states as well, though the situation is not so advanced. At every turn I see reasons why Americans should be watching South Africa very closely. The path we seem to be on is so similar it chills me to the bone. I have taken this article to one of our alternative news sites in the US. RumorMillNews.com. The owner of that site, Rayelan Allan has long been a strong supporter of Jan's work here at AC. Here is the link to that article. I hope some of my fellow Americans will find it of interest:http:

Hi Jan,

Just to let you know R1 million is nothing when you start talking about medical equipment.
You thought the department of Home affairs was corrupt...you have no idea of the millions being squandered.
For example, Pretoria academic and Johannesburg hospital recently bought 6 or 7 cancer treatment systems. They go for about 10 to 20 million a piece. The owner of the BEE company, with top notch links to the ANC, got the tender. The equipment actually got delivered before the tender was finalized.
The specific models are sold for about $300 000 in India, the government bought them for about R10 million a piece.
I have worked in most of the hospitals in the Gauteng region, all I can say is make sure you have medical aid!! You WILL DIE of infection in a state hospital.
